The numbers are out on the most dangerous highways in America. A survey by Geotab lists the most dangerous highway in every state, and puts them in order from number one (most dangerous) to number 50 (least dangerous). The most dangerous highway in Georgia is State Route 11, which runs from Georgia’s northern border with North Carolina to our southern border with Florida.

What did the survey say about State Route 11?

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Highway Administration, State Route 11 saw 124 fatal crashes in the last 10 years, and 141 fatalities. It has a fatal crash rate of 0.8 per one million vehicles. According to the survey, it sees about 12 accidents each year.

Even with this number of fatalities, Georgia is near the middle of the pack, holding spot number 20 out of all 50 states. Florida has the nation’s most dangerous highway, US-1, which saw almost 1,100 fatalities in the last 10 years. Georgia had three times as many fatal crashes as Rhode Island (39), the state with the least dangerous highway in the nation.

Where does Georgia State Route 11 run?

Georgia State Route 11 runs for 376 miles, traveling the entire length of the state from north to south. It is the longest highway in the state of Georgia. Along the route, it goes through part of 20 Georgia counties.

What does this mean for me?

Anyone who has driven on our roads knows how dangerous they can be. In fact, according to a list published by the National Safety Council (NSC) in February 2017, Georgia saw a 34 percent increase in traffic fatalities from 2014 and 2016.

An article in Forbes discussing the Geotab survey suggests that drivers use the information from this study to avoid these dangerous highways. When you know which highway is the most dangerous in your state, you can reduce your risk of being in a fatal car accident by staying off that highway whenever possible.

We know that you cannot always avoid certain roads. And while dangerous roads and traffic are not going away anytime soon, there are things you can do to keep yourself and your family safe on these dangerous highways:

  • Always wear your seat belt. Refuse to start the car until everyone buckles up.
  • Never drive distracted. Turn your phone on silent, pick your radio station or playlist, and make sure your kids and pets are restrained before you back out of your driveway.
  • Never drink and drive. Never ride with anyone who has been drinking.
  • Know where you are going. Make sure you have consulted your GPS prior to getting out on the road. If you do not know where you are going, you can cause an accident while attempting to make a quick lane change or consulting your GPS.
