Jason R. Schultz
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, August is the most dangerous month for drivers in the United States. More motorists die in car accidents in the month of August than during any other month of the year.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, out of the twenty-five deadliest days between 2005 and 2009, seven occurred in August. In 2009, the overall number of people killed in car accidents in the United States dropped by 400 fatalities from the previous year. There were 2,864 deaths in the month of August, and those numbers remain steady year after year.
Accident rates increase in August because many Georgians vacation during this month. As a result, there are more cars and trucks on our highways. This Fayette County Georgia Wrongful Death Attorney suggests taking special precautions during weekends in August. Weekends typically see more accidents because of higher volumes of traffic. In 2009, Saturdays accounted for the largest number of accident fatalities with 120 on average. The second most dangerous day was Sunday, with an average of 117 accident deaths. There are no statistics available for 2010. Remember to drive at safe speeds and turn off your cell phone, blackberries and I phones while driving!
