Q:
What is a truck driver's "no zone?”

A:

Truck driver “no-zones” are blind spots – areas you’ll want to stay clear of so that you’ll always be visible to the truck driver. Truck driver no-zones are areas of high risk for accidents.

Other drivers need to be aware of these danger zones then keep clear of them when possible. This isn’t to say that one should discount the role of truck driver error in truck accidents. If a negligent truck driver caused your accident, contact an attorney experienced with truck crashes as soon as possible.

Truck Driver No-Zones

The U.S. Department of Transportation has a helpful, publicly available No-Zone Brochure that provides a good visual on where truck driver no-zones are located. The DOT explains that there are three primary no-zone areas to avoid when travelling next to large trucks to “help promote wreckless driving.”

  • Side No-Zones: Truck drivers cannot see alongside either side of their truck. Do not travel alongside them if possible. Unsure if the driver can see you? A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t see the truck driver’s face in his side-view mirror, he cannot see you.
  • Front No-Zones: In front of a truck is a dangerous place to be. Rigs need twice the amount of time and space to stop as passenger cars. Always keep a safe distance between your car and the truck, and never cut a truck off when passing.
  • Rear No-Zones: A large truck’s rear no-zone is quite long. Tailgating a truck is a recipe for disaster. Should the truck driver stop or back up suddenly, your car will be in trouble; the driver can’t see you, and you can’t see what’s going on in front of you.  Always stay a very good length behind the truck when travelling.

In addition to the above truck driver no-zones, you want to stay clear of a truck’s path when it’s turning or backing up. Never try to “squeeze by” when trucks are maneuvering.
