Besides property damage, certain illnesses and injuries may occur. Some people are more prone to become ill because of toxic mold exposure, while others are only mildly affected or not affected at all. Removing toxic mold from a property is the responsibility of the property owner.

Illnesses and Symptoms Caused by Toxic Mold

Toxic mold exposure may be especially harmful to certain demographics, including:

  • children;
  • senior citizens;
  • those with weakened immune systems;
  • those with respiratory problems; and
  • those with allergies.

There is debate regarding healthy levels of mold exposure and research is still being conducted to determine a causal link between mold exposure and certain rare health complications.

Still, certain symptoms may be associated with mold allergies including:

  • asthma;
  • allergies;
  • cough;
  • wheezing;
  • runny nose;
  • sneezing;
  • congestion;
  • sore throat; and
  • skin irritation.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has noted that sufficient evidence exists to link exposure to indoor mold with cough, wheeze, and upper respiratory symptoms. It also may be linked to asthma symptoms if the individual has asthma; and hypersensitivity pneumonitis if the individual is susceptible to this condition, which is similar to pneumonia.

For instance, other conditions have been associated with mold exposure, although the CDC notes that while some reports exist, they are rare and a causal link between mold exposure and pulmonary hemorrhage or memory loss has not been proven.
