Top 10 Potential Factors in a Truck Accident
An impaired truck driver is just one potential cause for a crash. Truck accidents can stem from weather conditions, fatigue, inattentive driving and more. In order to seek compensation through a claim, you will need to establish that it was the driver’s negligence that led to you being injured.
Possible Causes of Truck Accidents
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), in 2009 there were 2,987 fatal accidents involving a large truck and approximately 51,000 injuries stemming from a large truck crash. Many of these victims suffer not only physically and emotionally, but financially as well.
You may be burdened with medical bills and unable to work. Determining the cause of an accident is critical if you hope to receive compensation for these expenses and other damages.
The FMCSA conducted a study with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to determine the causes of serious accidents involving large trucks. While there were many, some were more common than others.
According to the study, the following are the top ten factors associated with truck crashes:
- problems with brakes;
- interruption of traffic flow;
- use of prescription drugs;
- going too fast given the current conditions;
- not familiar with roadway;
- roadway conditions;
- required stop (crosswalk, streetlight, etc);
- use of over-the-counter drugs;
- improper surveillance; and
- driver fatigue.
It’s interesting to note that two of these factors are related to over-the-counter and prescription drug use. An impaired truck driver doesn’t just include one under the influence of alcohol, but drug use – even with a valid prescription – could also be an issue in some cases.
