Falls accidents among older adults are a huge problem in the United States. In 2010, 2.3 million older adults sustained fall injuries requiring a trip to the emergency department, and 21,700 died as result of a fall, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It’s important to take the necessary precautions to prevent falling accidents to decrease your risk. It’s also a good idea to learn how to get up from a fall.

Steps for How to Get Up from a Fall

First, if ever you ever fall, quickly assess the situation and determine if you are injured. If you believe you are hurt, do not attempt to move. Rather, call out for a family member or use your medical alert device if you have one with you.

If you don’t think you are seriously hurt, you can follow the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ guidelines below for getting up safely.

  • Step 1: If you feel yourself falling, try to fall on your buttocks to minimize the impact on your body.
  • Step 2: Try to roll over by “turning your head in the direction of the roll.”
  • Step 3: Crawl to the nearest sturdy piece of furniture to pull yourself up, such as a couch or chair. Use both hands to begin pulling your body weight up.
  • Step 4: Once you’ve pulled yourself into a kneeling position, bend your stronger leg, place that foot on the floor, and start to push off of the ground.
  • Step 5: Slowly and carefully twist around and sit in the chair or on the couch.
