Motorcyclist Killed After Colliding Head-On With a Car on U.S. Highway 41

November 24, 2010 - Ringgold, Ga. - A man was killed Sunday evening when his motorcycle collided head-on with a car.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that the car and motorcycle accident occurred at around 8:15 p.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 41 in downtown Ringgold. Gary Eugene Burress Jr., 30, of Cohutta, was riding his motorcycle on the highway, near the Dodge dealership, at the time of the accident.

According to witnesses on the scene, Burress crossed into the opposite lane of traffic to pass the vehicle before him. Burress' motorcycle then collided head-on with an oncoming Hyundai Accent.

Authorities stated that Burress had been travelling at a high rate of speed and died instantly on impact.

The driver of the Hyundai received minor injuries in the crash. This person was transported to Erlanger Hospital for treatment. The identity of the driver is yet to be released.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident and there were no further injuries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics show that there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
