Man Killed in Conyers Wreck, Police Suspect Alcohol Was a Factor

November 22, 2010 - Conyers, Ga.
- One man was killed in a wreck in Conyers in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Rockdale Citizen
reports that the accident happened shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Ga. Highway 138 and East Fairview Road. John Fletcher, 51, of Conyers, was driving his Dodge Ram eastbound on the roadway when he came to a stop sign. Fletcher stopped at the stop sign before moving into the intersection.

A Jeep Cherokee then entered the intersection travelling southbound on East Fairview Road and collided with the driver's side of Fletcher's vehicle. Fletcher's vehicle then flipped over on the roadway.

Fletcher was pronounced dead on the scene. The 47-year-old male driver of the Jeep, who is from Decatur, received head injuries in the collision. The driver was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital by medical helicopter.

According to officials, the cause of the accident remains under investigation. However, Lt. Myra Pearrell of the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office stated that it is believed that the Jeep drove through a stop sign at the intersection.

Initial reports indicated that the driver of the Jeep was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Charges against the driver are pending results from further blood alcohol and other tests.
