Head-on Collision with Tractor Trailer in Barrow County Leaves One Dead

December 22, 2010 - Winder, Ga. - A collision between a tractor trailer and a pickup truck in Barrow County has left one man dead.

Access North Georgia reports that the fatal accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. Monday on Highway 53 close to Rockwell Church Road. Stephen Patrick Davis, 29, of Monroe, was driving his pickup truck north on the highway when he collided with a tractor trailer.

Davis was pronounced dead on the scene of the accident. The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured.

The identity of the driver of the tractor trailer has not been released, except to say that he is a man from Virginia.

Highway 53 was closed to traffic for several hours following the accident. The Georgia Department of Transportation had to clean up the wrecked vehicles and a diesel fuel leak before reopening the highway.

Officials from the Georgia Highway Patrol were on the scene in response to the accident. Authorities have said that Davis' pickup truck had evidently "drifted" across the centerline of the highway into the path of the oncoming semi-truck.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Georgia Crash Statistics show that there were 1,284 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Georgia.
